It matters what you put on and in your body. That glow and twinkle in your eye comes from deep within yourself at the cellular layer. Our organs radiate the essence of our overall health. Did you know that your skin is your largest organ? Because of this, our skin plays a huge role in signaling if there are any brewing health issues. Tune into your skin and you can address your wellness needs at the first sign of distress to help prevent a chronic issue.

There are three layers to our skin. The epidermis is the outer layer, which offers protection as a waterproof barrier. The dermis is the middle layer of fibrous connective tissue, hair follicles, blood vessels, nerve endings, and sweat glands. The hypodermis is the deepest layer and is also made up of connective tissue, fascia, and fat for insulation and cushioning, and it connects the skin to bone and muscle. These skin layers connect via the basement membrane, which is an interlocking structure where the epidermis connects to the dermis through folds and collagen fibers. The dermis then links to the hypodermis using connective tissue, which adheres the skin to muscles and bones, with blood vessels and nerves bridging the layers for nourishment.

There is connection and communication within our skin layers, so if there is a tissue issue, there is a health problem. Inflammation and lack of nutrients negatively impact the vitality of your tissues. The integrity of your tissues must be nourished from the inside out. When it comes to inflammation, you need antioxidant support to combat the destructive processes occurring throughout the body.

Let’s dig into what nourishes your skin. Vitamin A promotes cell growth and turnover, which helps with texture. Vitamin C naturally boosts collagen production and is a powerful antioxidant that fights free radicals and aids in tissue repair. Vitamin D supports immune and skin barrier functioning. Vitamin E is a moisturizing antioxidant that protects against sun damage. B vitamins support the skin barrier and moisture. Zinc helps with wound healing, immune system support, and oil regulation. Selenium protects against oxidative stress and UV damage. Omega-3s and probiotics help reduce inflammation, dryness, and skin irritation. It’s important to test these nutrients. Here at Wellness Matters, we test vitamins and minerals to ensure our patients fall within the optimal range so they can feel their best.

Your skin and mucus membranes, such as your mouth, are highly absorptive, so be sure to use all-natural soaps, shampoos, conditioners, moisturizers, and dental care products. Your tissues are soaking them up, so make sure to “feed” your skin the good stuff. The skin of your lips has fewer cell layers and loses moisture more quickly, so be sure to use an all-natural chapstick.

Self-care is key when it comes to wellness. Here at Wellness Matters, we make your wellness journey all-encompassing, including our all-natural spa. This month’s facial special includes organic cherries, coconut yogurt, and honey. Treat yourself to this nutrient-dense, moisturizing facial!
